History And Places

Wade In

During the Jim Crow segregation-by-law era in Miami, when the Ku Klux Klan had a prominent office and regularly marched through city streets to intimidate, Black people could not lawfully enter bay waters anywhere in Miami-Dade County. In a protest organized by the NAACP and Attorney Lawson E. Thomas, 10 Black Miamians staged a Wade-In at Haulover Beach on Miami Beach. The protestors were not arrested, although Thomas brought $800 in bail money in case they were. To view the full video of Richard W. Harris Jr., visitMiami MoCAAD's YouTube channel.
